"Listening To Spirit"

 Listening to Spirit

There comes a time on the Reiki path when the energy begins to speak back to you — not in words, but in experiences, signs, and deep inner knowing. This is what I call *listening to Spirit*. When we listen, we realise that Reiki is not just a healing practice, but a living dialogue with life itself. Spirit speaks through nature, through coincidence, through discomfort, and through the quiet stirrings of our own hearts. Below are some moments from my journey that have shown me how Spirit communicates — sometimes softly, sometimes fiercely, but always with wisdom and love.

 The Whisper of the Trees

When I was training in my first degree Reiki, my teacher, **Jane Raworth**, gave me a simple but powerful instruction: *Go into the woods and listen to the trees.*

So I did. I walked amongst them, and for the first time, I stopped long enough to truly hear. The trees were alive with communication — the way they moved and brushed against one another, the way the energy pulsed between them. They were speaking, always speaking, in a language most of us have forgotten how to hear.

That day I realised that Reiki teaches us to reconnect with this natural conversation — to tune our hearts back to the living, breathing world.

The Oak Tree and the Woman Who Couldn’t Breathe

Years later, I worked with a woman who suffered from severe sensitivities — allergic to almost everything, unable to live in her own home, terrified of scent, electricity, and the world around her. I remember one day sitting in her garden, in the rain, sending her Reiki as she sat at a distance with a mask over her face.

There was a great oak tree at the end of her garden, and as I looked at it, a voice came through — calm, deep, ancient:

“If they have allowed their breath to be taken, they are already dead.”

It stopped me still. I knew then that her illness was the manifestation of fear — of the holding, the closing off, the refusal to breathe life in. Breath *is* life. It is the first thing we receive when we enter this world, and the last thing we release when we leave it. That message from Spirit reminded me: healing begins when we allow ourselves to breathe again.

The Car Crash and the Uncomfortable Blessing

Reiki doesn’t always bring comfort — sometimes it brings disruption that leads to truth. My partner’s family member was under extreme stress at work. I told her she needed to rest, to see a doctor, to take time off. She refused — she said she couldn’t afford to stop.

Eventually, she asked me to send Reiki to the situation. I warned her that it might not feel easy, that Reiki sometimes moves us through chaos before peace. The very next morning, she was in a car accident — her car was written off . She was forced to take months off work, and during that time, she received a settlement that eased her worries and allowed her to rest and reset.

She rang me and said, “You did that!” — and I gently reminded her, *you asked Reiki to bring what was needed*. It’s a story that shows how Reiki works in the highest good, even when the path feels rough underfoot.

### The Dichotomy

One evening, after an eight-hour journey, my partner climbed into the hot tub where we were staying. The rain was gently falling, and he sighed and said to himself, “This is heaven.” Then, a thought crossed his mind — *what if you had so much heaven that it turned to hell?*

And clear as day, he heard a man’s voice reply, calm and wise:

> “That’s a dichotomy, that is.”

He didn’t even know the word — he had to run inside and ask me what it meant! But it was a moment of Spirit speaking directly, reminding us of balance — of how too much of anything, even joy, can become its opposite. It’s the lesson of the middle path, of harmony, of the space where dualities meet.

Each of these moments — the trees, the oak, the crash, the voice in the rain — has reminded me that Reiki is not just a method, it’s a relationship. It asks for humility, curiosity, and deep respect. When you walk this path, Spirit will speak. Sometimes softly, sometimes fiercely, but always for your highest good.

All we need to do is listen.
